Lesson: Intermediate color mixing, blending and
painting

Here is the painting for our lesson. This lesson
focuses on color mixing as well as value placement. There are
technical brush techniques involved as well. The colors may appear
different on your computer screen but the lesson remains the same.
Ready? Well lets get to it! |

After sketching out your composition, mix cad yellow light and cad yellow deep with white against the mountain. The next step you see here is mixing cad orange and cad red light as you see here. |
![]() |
After placing the last color and brushing a bit on top, mix some alizarin crimson and permanent blue to get this darker color. If you look closely, I blend as I go and also paint in a staggered manner. That gives me a more natural look rather than a statcic paint application. |
![]() |
This next color is more blue and crimson with a touch of black. Don't use pure black because it does not have the same color as the blue red mixture. The color should look like a deep purple. |
![]() |
After painting the color blend out any hard lines like you see. Try not to lose all of the irregular spacing. |
![]() |
Next fill in the mountain as you see here with the same color as the last cloud color. If you don't have enough be sure to mix some more. |
![]() |
Now go back to the white and add cad red light, cad orange and crimson to get the next color. You don't have to clean the brush, just wipe it off because we want some of the previous color to tone down the bright reddish color for the water. |
![]() |
Now add this color to the water. Notice the slight gap? Thats where the next color will go. It will simulate a swell. |
![]() |
Add blue, crimson and black like the cloud stage and fill the rest in including the gap. Blend as you go and make sure you strok horizontally not vertically. |
![]() |
Add orange and white to you water color and with a flat brush highlight the horizon like you see here. |
![]() |
This is what your under painting should look like. Let
this dry before going on to the next step.
If you didn't like you results, try again. It may take some practicing hitting all the right colors but the more you it the better you get. |

Once it has dried, mix a reddish orange highlight for the cloud with white, cad red light and cad orange. Then use a flat brush to apply. If it appears to light or dark, adjust the color accordingly. |
![]() |
With a liner brush, do the same for the color below. The thin lines make it look like ripples in the water and it shows crisp detail. |
![]() |
Now do a second layer with more yellow orange to get a lighter highlight. |
![]() |
With Black and cad red light, add rocks in the foreground as you see here |
![]() |
Use burnt siena and white to highlight the rocks. Make sure you leave shadows when doing highlights. |
![]() |
This is the photo used for reference on the next step. use photos, sketches, videos and whatever is at your disposal for the details in your art. |
![]() |
Here with the same black and red, use a liner brush to simulate the pattern of the pine needles |
![]() |
This photo is used for the left side of the painting inspiration. |
![]() |
Draw out and paint the tree on the left hand side. You dont have to worry about making look like the photo, but make sure you simulate the pattern the best you can. |
![]() |
With white and yellow add some final highlights to the sky and then your done! |

This is what the finished painting should look like.
Remember that painting is a learning lesson and if you don't get it right
from the first time, then try again using your mistakes as a teacher.
E-mail me any attempts at this and I will respond with a critique as time permits. Mahalo, See you at the Easel! Painting demonstration can be purchased in video form. To order, contact us at mailto:heart@hawaii.rr.com |
